Notes from the curators:

The idea for this exhibit began in January 2020, when we planned to host a traveling exhibit on WWI from another institution. When the images arrived ahead of installation, we realized that particular exhibit wouldn't be a good fit for our university audience. So we turned our attentions to creating an exhibit focused on the University of Kentucky during 1918. Reading through yearbooks, issues of the Kentucky Kernel, and board meeting minutes from 1918 made us realize it was a distinctive and interrupted year for the students and faculty at UK due to the influenza pandemic and efforts to mobilize for WWI. Football games were cancelled, along with classes and other events. We started referring to 1918 and our exhibit as "An Interrupted Year" until we, ourselves, began to experience an interrupted year in 2020 due to another deadly virus.

Our work researching the history of the influenza pandemic while experiencing our own coronavirus pandemic afforded us the unique opportunity to witness parallels and contrasts to both situations, and how they were each faced by the University of Kentucky given the knowledge and resources the institution possessed in each time period. We are grateful to have numerous sources available online through the Special Collections Research Center's Explore UK digital collections portal, as well as online databases and access to other digitized collections so we could complete the exhibit while working safely from home.
